Language Of The Soul Part Two

All music should adhere to biblical principals as a rule this means no immorality associated with the piece, in modern society we can almost say that this is impossible. If we understand that todays music is offensive as Christians you can be sure this comes from the wisdom of The Holy Spirit who told us this.

Hymns are generally safe but modern ideas are trying to erode the message.

Contemporary music is ok as long as they are true to the Word of God.

From our first article Language Of The Soul we discovered the foundation of melody and where it sadly is in the present time. From the beautiful start of creation we had music within the fabric of the universe, in the kingdom of heaven it was practiced and perfected. The creator fashioned mankind in his image and gifted us melody to worship him and for our enjoyment. The Lord gave us the Bible as instruction on how to live a Holy life in a world ravaged by sin and gave us Bible music, sacred melody and hymns, today we have worldly music called terrestrial which is imperfect. Music in modern times is used as a tool to attack the younger generation noticeably children who can be influenced very easily. Pop stars make sex appealing which adds to the drive to be like them. Melody attacks the church in many ways from hidden messages in songs, bands that have names that directly attack God and lyrics that are rebellious with swearing and immorality as standard.

Christians are always trying to improve there minds to be more Christ-like and music plays a pivotal role and should always be in the spirit of truth. Harmony affects the mind while rhythm can manipulate the body, rhythm should not affect the body in a sexual way standards befitting a child of God need to be followed. The body is part of the mind and spirit and is balanced perfectly with the Word of God harmony and spirit should always follow suit. If we go to church we eat instruction, correction and encouragement, music is the same in principal and should correct our attitudes giving us clear mandate and to encourage us to be moral and Christ-like. Melody should have no negative words or repeating something that can be classed as detrimental over and over again.

Remember we have spiritual depression in society and music can communicate the Word of God. Music must have truth and be Bible based the Word of God must shine not the music taking over. We do not go to church for a concert we attend to praise God and learn instruction.

The first recorded song in scripture is in Exodus:

Exodus 15:1-2

The Song of Moses

15 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the Lord, and spoke, saying:

I will sing to the Lord,
For He has triumphed gloriously!
The horse and its rider
He has thrown into the sea!
2 The Lord is my strength and song,
And He has become my salvation;
He is my God, and I will praise Him;
My father’s God, and I will exalt Him.

There are over 550 references to music, musicians and instruments in the Bible Spiritually good music evil flees and melody ministers to all our spiritual needs, remember we are Spirit based beings as God is Spirit. Music can try to free mankind from restrictions as it gives a message, and the words enforce it.

Proverbs 15:31-33

31 “The ear that hears the rebukes of life
Will abide among the wise.
32 He who disdains instruction despises his own soul,
But he who heeds rebuke gets understanding.
33 The fear of the Lord is the instruction of wisdom,
And before honor is humility.”

Affects

Melody-Spirit (Christians take note Spirit is the most important.)

Harmony-Mind.

Rhythm-Body.

We know music affects the body like toe tapping or head bopping, it affects emotions, the mind and intellect and can be addictive. Remember also melody can bring arousal which is not in the will of God, singing and praying to the Lord through The help of The Holy Spirit brings us on equal footing with God and all nature as nature reflects music. Musical principals exists in all of Gods creations.

Psalm 96:2

2 “Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
Proclaim the good news of His salvation from day to day.”

Acts 16:25

25 But at midnight Paul and Silas were praying and singing hymns to God, and the prisoners were listening to them.

Christian music should have order rather than disarray, holiness instead of sensual needs, righteousness and morals instead of following worldly ways. Christian Music is not for entertainment or to be used as a concert where the music dilutes the word of God or make vague references to the Lord or Jesus. It can be so easy to get trapped in this type of secular sound where the message is compromised. Remember God can dwell in an instrument for worthy praise. There should be unity and it must add to the experience of worship and not detract, unifying people, praising and thanking the Lord in spirit and in truth. Melody can inspire us to be worthy in the Lords eyes but not in the case of Adolf Hitler who used Richard Wagner’s music as inspiration, some of his operas contain racist beliefs and adverse caricatures of Jews.

God’s people in The Old Testament of the Bible were inspired to study and practice the art of music given to mankind from God. Music is written all throughout scripture and is a universal language to the soul, it is mentioned over 1150 times in varies forms from melody, music, hymns, harp, lyre, to horns plus many more. Music was used to be vocal and to project the voice and praise the creator who is worthy of our love. The creator infused further the affect of music by giving us instruments to achieve perfection in this universal language. Melody was used for festivity and bereavement and horns were used in battle as we learned from the first article. Trumpets and horns were used as a sound of power to proclaim the King of Kings who is worthy of a grand entrance. Victory notes were used with these beautiful instruments on the battlefield.

Later King David used instruments for worship and their use in temples, so God’s people sang Psalms, hymns and spiritual songs. Worship is singing to God and praising his name for everything he stands for, and exalting Jesus Christ who shed his blood for us on the cross at Calvary. Music has been split into two today:

Sacred music which has existed before mankind for thousands of years.

Pagan music which came from nature, myth and magic.

Some say God created all forms of melody and all was divinely inspired by him but this is not true as mankind has warped music to move away from God. Mankind does not want to totally submit their life to Christ and have personal holiness demanded by Jesus in appearance and attitudes, to praise the Lord which is our expression of who he is in awe of his greatness. Music artists show this when they became rebellious, lustful, and indecent in dress. How many artists today reflect God’s beauty and heavenly peace?

Modern music is out to attack morality where rock music and sex is linked. Many classical compositions have murder, violence, hatred, greed, immorality as standard for there theme. The bible does not say rock music is evil or we should not listen to it God gave us free-will to decide for ourselves. Many say rock music is corrupted and its down to true Christians to bring it back to a mainstream market. This is hard when Satan controls music, remember Lucifer was the Chief minister of music in heaven and now is the chief minister of melody on the earth. Satan influences lyrics and sound because he wants us to be free to taste lust, to be immoral and separate us further from the will of God.

Worship means reverence Satan wants to be worshiped. We worship the Lord in the age of grace in spirit and in truth, we need total devotion and obedience, if we humble ourselves Jesus will lift us higher and higher. Satan wants all of this himself and to worship him with respect, he wants us to fear him as God wants to be feared. Remember fear means respect, will we submit to the word and music the language of the soul or to Satan and the total package he has to offer?
