What Does It Mean To Fear God?

 It means to respect him, his divine power and his divine glory. The creator deserves our respect and our worship. We should be mindful of his mighty wrath if we lapse into sinful ways. We have to give him a place of reverence, and  deep respect.   Our Father is the Creator of the universe. He is the Great I Am.   He is the one that was, is, and is to come.   We take that so lightly and don’t understand the significance of who the Almighty is today.  He heals us. Salvation comes through him.   He is our everything.   Our Provider.   We have PeaceHe is Love absolute. There is a spirit of fear which is a healthy respect for the Lord and Fear of the Lord when we become scared or terrified of God.

Hebrews 12:28-29

28 Therefore, since we are receiving a kingdom which cannot be shaken, let us have grace, by which we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear. 29 For our, God is a consuming fire.

Definition of the word fear is awe, wonder, respect, dread, amazement, veneration, and wonderment. The first account of the word fear in the bible is mentioned in Genesis.

Genesis 22:12

12 And He said, “Do not lay your hand on the lad, or do anything to him; for now I know that you fear God since you have not withheld your son, your only son, from me.”

The Essence of the Law

Deuteronomy 10:12-13

12 “And now, Israel, what does the Lord your God require of you, but to fear the Lord your God, to walk in all His ways and to love Him, to serve the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul, 13 and to keep the commandments of the Lord and His statutes which I command you today for your good.

The scripture above is simple respect the Father who created everything, walk in his ways, and love him, as he loves us. Serve him requires us to worship him with all our heart and soul, keeping his divine laws firmly in check, which is for our own good. God wants us to be good, happy, loved, he gave us this, and so it’s not much to ask to give a little back, is it? The fear of the lord is called the foundation of wisdom.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, O Lord;

I will walk in your truth;

Unite my heart to fear your name.

Teach me your way through our helper and comforter the Holy Spirit to be born again, and walk in truth, united in love and respect for the King Of Kings, respect and reverence total. Fearing God is key to his wisdom, and beautiful knowledge. If we have perfect love, as God is perfect and love, he is our best friend, with love like that we can only respect, and glorify his wondrous name.

John 15:13

13 Greater love has no one than this than to lay down one’s life for his friends.

1 John 4:18

18 There is no fear in love, but perfect love casts out fear because fear involves torment. But he who fears has not been made perfect in love.

Fear in the bible is mentioned over 300 times, The Bible mentions two specific types of fear. The first type is beneficial to mankind what we should do. The second type is to be overcome. The first type of fear is fear of the Lord. This type of fear does not mean to be afraid or scared, rather it is awe of the creator; a reverence for His power and glory. However, it is also a proper respect for His wrath and anger. In other words, the fear of the Lord is a total acknowledgement of all that the almighty is, which comes through knowing Him and His wonderful attributes. Some Fear in different translations of the bible has been replaced with the word reverence. Fear is a hatred of all evil things.

Proverbs 8:13

The fear of the Lord is to hate evil;

Pride and arrogance and the evil way

And the perverse mouth I hate.

Psalm 25:12

Who is the man that fears the Lord?

Him shall He teach in the way He chooses.

God teaches us wisdom

Proverbs 9:10

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom,

And the knowledge of the Holy One is understanding.

Live in respect, if you love someone you fear of offending that person.

Psalm 130:3-4

If You, Lord, should mark iniquities,

O Lord, who could stand?

But there is forgiveness with you,

That you may be feared.

Once we fear the lord, with a deep love and respect he gives us confidence and a place with him to dwell, we are all God’s children who come to faith and with him, we have the perfect refuge and teaches us the truth.

Proverbs 14:26

In the fear of the Lord, there is strong confidence,

And His children will have a place of refuge.

Psalm 86:11

Teach me your way, O Lord;

I will walk in your truth;

Unite my heart to fear your name.

Fear the Lord is a good thing and the Almighty Father can reward us richly if we respect him and the bible, and the loving nature of the creator. We are all Kings and Priests.

Revelation 1:6

6 “And has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him, be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.”

Proverbs 22:4

“By humility and the fear of the Lord

Are riches and honor and life.”

1 Timothy 3:16-16

16 “And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness:

God was manifested in the flesh,

Justified in the Spirit,

Seen by angels,

Preached among the Gentiles,

Believed on in the world,

Received up in glory.”

Romans 1:20-32

 20 For since the creation of the world His invisible attributes are clearly seen, being understood by the things that are made, even His eternal power and Godhead, so that they are without excuse, 21 because, although they knew God, they did not glorify Him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their thoughts, and their foolish hearts were darkened.  22 Professing to be wise, they became fools, 23 and changed the glory of the incorruptible God into an image made like corruptible man—and birds and four-footed animals and creeping things.

24 Therefore God also gave them up to uncleanness, in the lusts of their hearts, to dishonour their bodies among themselves, 25 who exchanged the truth of God for the lie, and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever. Amen.

26 For this reason, God gave them up to vile passions. For even their women exchanged the natural use for what is against nature.  27 Likewise also the men, leaving the natural use of the woman, burned in their lust for one another, men with men committing what is shameful, and receiving in themselves the penalty of their error which was due.

28 And even as they did not like to retain God in their knowledge, God gave them over to a debased mind, to do those things which are not fitting; 29 being filled with all unrighteousness, sexual immorality, wickedness, covetousness, maliciousness; full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, evil-mindedness; they are whisperers, 30 backbiters, haters of God, violent, proud, boasters, inventors of evil things, disobedient to parents, 31 undiscerning, untrustworthy, unloving, unforgiving, unmerciful; 32 who, knowing the righteous judgment of God, that those who practice such things are deserving of death, not only do the same but also approve of those who practice them.
